High Performance Powertrain

The Komatsu Tier 4 Final engine uses a Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Komatsu Variable Geometry Turbocharger (KVGT), cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), and an advanced electronic control system to reduce emissions, speed up response and reduce fuel consumption.  The KDPF provides automatic regeneration that does not interfere with daily operation.

In order to meet Tier 4 Final emissions standards, an SCR system was added to the WA480-8.  The SCR injects DEF into the exhaust stream in order to reduce Particulate Matter (PM).  

Komatsu large capacity torque converter with lock-up provides faster top speed, quick acceleration and lock-up in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears to reduce fuel consumption.

Tier 4 Final Compliant

In order to meet Tier 4 Final emissions standards, an SCR system was added to the WA470-8.  The SCR injects DEF into the exhaust stream in order to reduce Particulate Matter (PM).  

The DEF tank is easily accessed on the RH side of the machine.  It is well protected behind the ladder and easy to open access panel.  The DEF tank contains a sight glass to prevent overfilling and spilling or wasting DEF.

To help in cold conditions, the DEF tank is heated with engine coolant lines.  The reversing pump purges the DEF delivery lines at key off.  The delivery lines are also heated with wire wrapping to prevent freezing during operation.  

A DEF level gauge has also been added to the monitor panel.  Similar to a fuel gauge, this informs the operator of the amount of DEF remaining in the tank.

Low Fuel Consumption

Komatsu SmartLoader Logic acquires data from various sensors in the loader and controls engine torque based on the job requirements.  This function is automatic and seamless to the operator, reducing fuel consumption without decreasing production.

Komatsu Auto Idle Shutdown helps reduce idle time and operating costs.  The time limit is programmable and may range from 3 to 60 minutes.

Dual-Mode Engine Power Select System allows the operator to quickly choose between E-Mode for normal applications to reduce fuel consumption or P-Mode when maximum power is required for applications such as load and carry, or up a hill.  

Ecology Guidance provides messages to the operator in real time with information on how to reduce fuel consumption through different ways of operation.

Variable displacement piston pumps with CLSS deliver only as much hydraulic flow as the job requires to reduce fuel consumption.

Operator Environment

The operator’s cabin provides the operator with a large, quiet and pressurized work environment while providing excellent visibility during operation.

The high-resolution color monitor enables fast, accurate viewing of operational information.  The operator can check operational information, such as fuel consumption, working and idling hours, view ecology guidance recommendations or perform many other functions quickly and easily.  

The rear view monitoring system is standard for improved operator convenience.  This system provides the operator with a dedicated full color monitor located on the right hand side of the cab.

The new fully adjustable air-ride suspension seat with heat and seat-mounted Electronic Pilot Control (EPC) levers increases productivity.  There is also an FNR switch incorporated into the RH console for increased convenience.

An integrated Load Meter is standard on all 2-lever / 2-valve machines.  The load meter displays bucket and truck totals on the main monitor panel and can be activated or deactivated at the operators preference.  An optional load meter printer is also available for job site convenience.

The large capacity cooling fan swings open for easier access to clean the coolers.  It features wider spacing of cooling fins and a standard auto-reversing fan to reducing clogging.  

The WA480-8 engine compartment is laid out for easy serviceability.  Filters, dipsticks, oil fill locations and the KDPF are conveniently located for easy access.

The WA480-8 features standard full rear fenders, which swing out for easy access to the engine compartment.  The engine air filter is also mounted externally for easy access.  

With KOMTRAX, monitor machine utilization, fuel consumption, working modes, KDPF regeneration and get e-mail notifications of important events.
